I understand that a 6sn7 is basically a beefed up 12au7, which is the output tube in a 'Firefly'. So thats one use. I'm sure there would be many others. |

Can it just be used in place of the 12AU7? Like as a preamp tube? |

Yeah, I think it can handle up to 450V plate and diss. something like 5W. I use them all the time in preamp circuits but I've thought of using a pair (i.e. a 'quad') in a low power push-pull. For folks who don't know... It is the larger 'octal' type tube, not unlike a 6V6 so of course you can substitute it for a 12AU7 in the sense of swapping one for the other. |

the 6sn7 was also used as the power tube in the Moonlight, running the two triodes in push-pull. I'm running a similar arrangement in my wreck/moonlight hybrid. It's amazingly loud with a good speaker. |

The 6SN7GTA/B has an increased plate dissipation rating, 7.5W total for both sections. And if that ain't beefy enough, you can go for a 6BL7GT or 6BX7GT. Dual triodes with the same pinout as the 6SN7, but with 12W dissipation rating. 1.5A heater though. My build, which uses 6SN7GTA or 6BL7 or 6BX7: [link] In the 12AU7-socket-compatible department, there is the 12BH7, which is a 12AU7 with a higher dissipation rating. -Jon |

Dave: Thanks for mentioning your build. Something like it is on my 'to do' list. Maybe I don't need to run 4 triode sections after all. Jon: Thanks for talking about the 6BL and 6BX tubes. I'd never heard of them. They sound like great alternatives. (I'd like to do an all-octal lowish amp in the 8-10W range). |

About your octal 8-10W amp idea: consider trying a pair of 6K6's - about 9W out. Only 400 mA per filament, and can take 315+V on the plates. That's what's in my moonlight test bed now. -Jon |
